Varicose veins is a commonly occurring problem, but in India the number of patients who seek treatment for varicose veins is comparatively lower. My clinical experience in varicose veins treatment reveals certain weird factors about this particular health issue.

"homeopathic treatment of varicose veins"

Even though there are many people who suffer from varicosity of veins, the number of people who accept this as a health issue are somewhat few. They usually prefer to ignore it until they start suffering from one or more of the symptoms of varicose veins.

Many of my patients with varicose veins have initially approached me for treatment of some other health problem. The varicosity of their veins gets discovered when I conduct their clinical examination.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins mean distended, swollen veins or veins that appear to be larger in size than normal. The increase in size could be mild, moderate or severe. They may appear to be twisted and convoluted and in fair-skinned people could look greenish or even purple.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are basically caused when vein valves do not function properly. The valves inside the veins are meant to regulate and maintain the flow of blood within the veins in a one-way direction towards the heart and block the backflow of impure or deoxygenated blood towards the organs and tissues.

When these one-way valves start to weaken or lose their elasticity, they do not close properly and due to this the impure blood starts to back-flow and accumulate within the veins. That is how these veins start to enlarge in size and appear swollen.

Risk Factors for Varicose Veins

Not everyone develops varicose veins. There are certain risk factors that can increase your chances of developing varicose veins:

1) Age

With increasing age, the veins in your body could lose their elasticity and thus become dilated and enlarged in size.

2) Prolonged Standing/ Sitting

If your lifestyle or occupation warrants prolonged standing or sitting, then you may be at an increased risk of developing varicose veins. Traffic police, surgeons, teachers and factory workers who stand for long periods of time have higher risk. Sitting for prolonged periods of time at desktop jobs also blocks the natural circulation and is a risk factor.

3) Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when there is increase in the blood volume. But this increased blood volume can in turn cause increased pressure upon the veins and to worsen matters the growing foetus applies pressure on the abdominal area and the inferior vena cava. In addition to this, the hormonal changes during pregnancy can dilate the veins and further add to the risk of developing varicosity of the veins.

4) Obesity

Obesity is another factor that can predispose to development of varicosity of the veins by increasing pressure on the veins.

5) Family History

If varicose veins runs in your family, then you may be at a higher risk than the general population.

6) Gender

Females are more prone to developing varicosity due to the hormonal changes that occur in the body during various stages of the reproductive cycle. Varicose veins could also develop in women who use HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and contraceptive pills.

Self-care for Varicose Veins

Self-care plays a very important role in varicose veins treatment. There are certain precautions and lifestyle changes that you must adopt if you want to get relief from varicose veins.

The first among them is to avoid any of the risk factors that may be aggravating the problem. For example, if your lifestyle or profession is such that you stand / sit for prolonged hours then you must avoid doing this. Try to walk about every 30 mins.

If you are overweight, you must try to do regular exercise and lose the excessive weight. This will not only relieve varicose veins but also improve your overall health and reduce risk of numerous other diseases like diabetes, hypertension etc.

If you have varicose veins, you must avoid wearing tight clothing especially tight socks or tight legwear.
